An exciting adventure story set in South Africa in the mid-nineteenth century at the time of the discovery of diamonds…

Why are the white invaders ‘gathering like ants in a rainstorm’ seeking little white stones ‘that cannot be eaten and cannot have children?’ Mpande, King of the Zulus, sends tribesman Mapitha and two companions to the Kimberley diamond diggings to find out.

After three years, many adventures and clashes with the invaders, particularly Fritz Koekemoer, the original discoverer of the diamond field, Mapitha returns alone to the Zulu heartland. There he finds the new King Cetshwayo, in conflict with Sir Theophilus Shepstone, self-styled ‘White Father of the Zulu people’ conspiring to take over the independent Zulu nation with the help of the British army.
Rough Diamonds is a great read. It is full of interesting characters and crazy adventures. If only I had history lessons like that at school... reader.

Rough Diamonds is another page turning adventure set in the landscape of a fledgeling South Africa. The story takes us to a time in history where the new arrivals are struggling to establish themselves and the local populations are trying to understand what is happening around them. The story is told from various points of view so that we can understand the issues of the time, but as the book progresses, the Zulu perspective is heavily discussed and it is my feeling that the author has a deep understanding of the injustice sufferd by the locals. The Boers and the Brittish raped their new home in search of mineral wealth and to add insult to injury, used the locals as cheap labour. They never planned to share this wealth with the locals and embarked on a mission to turn the population into their personal labour force. This situation has never really changed and today, more than 100 years later, we are still witness to brutality in the mines unfortunately highlighted by extreme violence in the past few weeks (aug 2012) by police against miners. The irony of that in the new South Africa is hard to miss.
Rough Diamonds is an adventure story steeped in history . It takes you into the heart and soul of South Africa and its people and discusses some of the most important issues of the time. Many of these issues are still current, particularly in regard to cultural respect. Lucky for us there were some very positive relationships beween the local black population and the few settlers who resolved to do the right thing and their story is also important to remember.
Its hard to not feel shame when you read about the behaviour of the colonists and the ensuing enslavement of the locals. Thats history though and there is not much that can be done.Understanding it surely helps. Rough Diamonds is a great read. It is full of interesting characters and crazy adventures. If only I had history lessons like that at school.......
